The YourBlinds Excellence In Innovation Essay Scholarship 2008

Coffee. Water. What do these two liquids have in common? Some very smart people took these very common, undifferentiated, commodity beverages and made them an experience. No doubt you had a Starbucks coffee this morning. Had some Aquafina today? The ability to take something common and undifferentiated and make it an experience that triggers the senses is not a simple thing.

This scholarship is designed to exercise the innovation muscle of its recipient. One student (graduate or undergraduate) will be awarded this scholarship in recognition of his or her passion for innovation in making the common, uncommon in the custom window coverings industry. That's right. Window coverings are everywhere. They are common.


What Do I Have To Do to Win?

Simple. In return for $500 USD in your tuition and fees, we want you to write an essay of 1,000 words or more, on the topic of:

Tell us how you would make buying custom window coverings online, an uncommon experience that would have you and your best friend clammoring to buy some today. Tell us your vision for a differentiated, online, custom window coverings shopping experience.

One essay per person only. YourBlinds will not return essays or anything else submitted by contestants.

To apply for the scholarship please submit the following materials, along with the essay, between September 1, 2007 and June 1, 2008:

1) An official academic transcript containing the entrant's spring semester grades for the academic year in progress.
2) A copy of entrant's resume that includes e-mail address, campus address and phone number, student ID number, permanent address and phone number, major and expected graduation date.

To be eligible, all application materials must be received by email to scholarship@yourblinds.com by 5:00pm CST on June 1, 2008 for the academic year beginning September of that year.

Results for 2008

Our panel of judges took a lot of time working through the 3 essays we received, evaluating the originality, thoroughness, thoughtfulness and more of each of our entries. In the end, while the entries complied with the 1,000 word requirements and some even included illustrations, our panel was disappointed with the submissions. The question that applicants were asked to respond to was was about creating a "differentiated" online experience that would have folks wanting to buy from YourBlinds, not any one of our online competitors. It was clear that folks submitting entries did not take time to look at our competitors, for responses could have applied to any online company selling custom window coverings.

Based upon the responses, we have elected to extend the response window for our 3 entrants. They will have the opportunity to revise their entries to make their responses unique to YourBlinds. Revised entries are due by August 31, 2008 at midnight CT.
